A Raise Is Granted To Walmart Michigan Workforce
Good news comes to the Walmart employees from Michigan, of a raise in wages, efforts to pay off.
Walmart has always faced numerous challenges when it comes to its workforce around the world. It recently made headline when its employees started an online petition following a protest, they demand raise in wages and more discounts on all food items just like other retailers. It seems like that the protests were not a waste, a wage raise has been announced for the international retail chain workforce in Michigan.
Walmart stores Inc. has made $2.7 billion of investment in just two years in the United States workforce, just in wages. The business has made a huge investment hoping for better output, training and flexibility for the workers. It is yet again making an investment of another $62.4 million in order to give raise to almost 39,000 employees in Oklahoma, giving the workers $12.51 per hour and for part-time worker, $10.30 per hour starting from February.
Walmart Wholesale has not given an increase to the worker the first time in fact this is the third time since the previous year, the retailer is giving a raise. The starting pay initially in April was $9 per hour, however this wage number was changed back in July for 100,000 employees including the stores managers. Another good news is going to come in 2016 for the employees starting from January, with the minimum wage being $10 per hour, this amount is $2.75 more as the federal minimum salary. The manager and employees on higher post however will be given $15 per hour, and the new worker will start from $9 per hour, which will go to $10 per hour after their training has reached completion.
Walmart stores investment apparently is not going to a waste, it has seen the raises are making the customer experience better and an increase in employee engagement has been witnessed. An employee at one of the stores is single mother, Tamara Siddles said, “As a single mom, this pay increase couldn’t have come at a better time, this raise means I can afford to do things with my son, like go to the zoo, and I can actually start saving for his future.” The workforce the retailer has in Michigan is 29,000, where now employees will be given $13.61 an hour and part-time employees will be given a salary of $10.60 an hour.
The retail chain’s worker in Michigan are very happy about this raise, the managers will be given a salary of $15 per hour. The company, according to the New York Times is paying more to it workers in comparison to other retail chains in the market. However this cannot be completely good news for the business as it is on such a massive scale, the workforce it employs is huge with it. Increasing wages can lead to the prices of items in the stores being higher to compensate for the huge investment the business will make on its workforce, which can in return make the customer unhappy and the shopping more expensive for them.
