Twitter is collecting users application data for the last six months now to earn money.

Twitter Inc. witnessed a very poor quarter of the new fiscal year. The company was not able to post good results and failed to attract big name advertisers on its platform. Therefore, Facebook and Google share the major chunk of advertising market of social media in the industry.

So far, the micro blogging platform has made little or no impact to propagate its name. Despite of failing every now and then to lure away advertisers on the social media network, it never gives up and keeps on changing strategies in order to make things better in the future.

Recode suggests that the advertisers of the social media forum can now easily target users based on applications that are downloaded on their respective smartphone devices. It is believed that Twitter is collecting all the data it could in the past six months, regarding the smartphone apps downloaded by its user(s) on the phones. In addition, the company is now all set to use the six months data and turn it into money.

This announcement came on Wednesday when the company publicized that its advertisers will be using all the information to target users with ads. According to sources, advertisers will now target users based on the applications they download, which include all categories, despite of how recently it has been download on the phone.

Recode reports, “Twitter first announced in November that it was collecting this data, but until now, it wasn’t using it for anything. It’s easy to understand the draw from Twitter’s perspective: If Twitter knows you like Candy Crush, it may assume you like other similar games as well.”

However, many users are annoyed with this step taken by the company, while some are freaked out with this type of target marketing. Previously, users had an option to block and stop the app from collecting such kind of information through settings, but this feature in setting is now ‘opt-out’. Therefore, this means that the social media network will keep on collecting data and information until it has been told to stop doing so.

The company only tracks the applications that a user has downloaded; however, it will not gain access to anything occurring within the apps. For instance, the company will track that a user has downloaded WhatsApp or Candy Crush, but it will not have access to the messages within WhatsApp or on the user’s level of Candy Crush or anything about the in app purchases.

Twitter is only determined to start generating revenues from advertisements.
